Our Story
About Inland Waste Group
A Durban-born waste recovery business built on practical experience, community partnerships and a commitment to a cleaner South Africa.
Who We Are
Recovering Value from Waste
Inland Waste Group collects and recovers recyclable materials and provides general waste removal services across Greater Durban. We sort, grade, consolidate and dispatch recovered material to downstream buyers — turning what others discard into usable secondary raw materials.
Our vision is to build a dependable regional waste recovery business that improves access to recycling, creates paid work and supplies usable secondary raw materials. Our immediate focus is commercially viable collection, sorting, storage and dispatch in Durban South.
We currently operate from the Bluff Garden Site in Durban South, with a head office address at 5th Floor, Durban Club Chambers, 303 Anton Lembede Street, Durban.
What Drives Us
Our Values
Circular Economy
We recover paper, cardboard, plastics, glass and used oil — diverting material from landfill and returning it to productive use as secondary raw material.
Community First
Community waste pickers and small collectors are key partners. We offer transparent weighing, published buying grades and prompt payment to build reliable supply relationships.
Local Focus
Our operations are rooted in Durban South — Bluff, Mobeni, Jacobs and Prospecton — providing responsive, accessible services to households, schools, offices and businesses.
Accountability
Accurate weights, clear prices, verified records and prompt settlement are the foundation of every customer and supplier relationship we build.
Sustainable Growth
We expand only when operating evidence supports the commitment. Staged investment, validated buyer relationships and disciplined cash management protect the business.
Environmental Stewardship
South Africa recovered 63% of available paper for recycling in 2025. We contribute to that recovery rate by aggregating smaller local sources into saleable, graded loads.
Our Journey
Company History
The Idea Takes Root
While studying Accounting at Durban University of Technology in Pietermaritzburg, founder Njengenkosi Dube observed widespread illegal dumping — particularly glass bottles. Conversations with beverage manufacturers and glass producers revealed a clear gap in local collection and recovery services.
Inland Waste Group Founded
Using approximately R80,000 saved over 16 months during remote study through the COVID-19 period, Njengenkosi founded Inland Waste Group. A parallel entity, Gauteng Waste Recycling, was established to pursue a four-site agreement covering Pikitup landfill sites in Johannesburg.
Lessons Learned
A vehicle collision caused a three-month interruption to operations. Continuing premises costs placed pressure on cash. The founder settled outstanding supplier obligations before suspending the Gauteng operation and refocusing on building a sustainable base in Durban.
Bluff Operation Established
The current operational base at the Bluff Garden Site in Durban South was established. The business built experience buying from informal collectors, secured supplier-provided container infrastructure and grew to support four positions including the founder.
Expansion Phase
The two-year business plan targets consolidation of the Bluff operation, capital mobilisation of R500,000, and the launch of a standalone buy-back centre in October 2027. The expansion aims to add six new roles and reach 40 tonnes per month throughput by April 2028.
